Near Hastings on the north and west side of the Nishnabotna River is the 60+ acre Wearin Prairie, which has been maintained since 1854.
School age students from Mills County would tour the prairie, dress as early settlers, and learn about native grasses, soil, and traditional farming practices. Otha Wearin served as an Iowa Legislator in 1928 and 1930 and many other roles while he was actively involved in politics. Mr. Wearin served as a US Representative in Congress from 1933 to 1939.
