Emerson, Iowa

Emerson, Iowa artwork

Nestled in the Southwest corner of Iowa between the east and west branches of the Nishnabotna River, Emerson typifies the small town atmosphere and work ethics of the Midwest. With a population of 403, we strongly support the local school along with neighboring communities of Henderson, Hastings, Imogene, Malvern, Strahan and Red Oak.

Emerson is on the Eastern edge of Mills County and is home to the County Freedom rock, located in the city park.  Additionally, Emerson has Bass Park located just south of Emerson on Highway 59.  This provides a shaded area for picnic, camping, and ball field. The park was donated by George C. Bass, a local philanthropist, to the city of Emerson to encourage youth activities and family engagement

Other outdoor areas include Lake George, located 3 miles West of Emerson on Highway 34. This 9-acre park offers a 2-acre fishing lake with 2 picnic shelters.

Indian Creek Green Belt is a 12-acre park along Indian Creek composed of 5 acres of restored prairie, 4.5 acres of agricultural lands, and the remaining area is green space.

Located South of Highway 34 on 380th Street is the home of the Indian Creek Historical Society. Founded in 1996, the Indian Creek Historical Society is dedicated to revealing, preserving, and celebrating the agricultural and natural history of the early 20th century of Southwest Iowa, and seeks to provide residents with opportunities to become culturally and environmentally knowledgeable to become skilled and dedicated citizens that are willing to work individually and collectively to preserve the history of southwest Iowa.

Emerson has a public library which offers a variety of services for the residents. Emerson, Iowa is a welcoming small town located in eastern Mills County.
